Jeep Avenger: Most Common Problems and Breakdowns Found in 2025

Jeep Avenger (thermal, mild-hybrid and electric) – updated 2023–2025 guide to the most common problems : 1.2 PureTech engine (belt/chain), oil leaks, Start&Stop, cooling, DPF, defects of the electric version and 2025 Stellantis recall for risk of fuel leaks on the 1.2 turbo petrol engine.

✅ Introduction

The Jeep Avenger is the first Jeep B-SUV designed specifically for Europe and is built on a platform shared with the Fiat 600, Opel Mokka, Peugeot 2008, and other Stellantis models. It is available in the following versions:

  • 1.2 turbo petrol ;
  • 1.2 mild hybrid (e-Hybrid / 4xe);
  • 100% electric .

From 2023 to today, by working alongside customers and workshops, we have collected a series of recurring issues regarding:

  • 1.2 PureTech engine (old series with belt and new series with chain);
  • oil leaks and small leaks;
  • Start&Stop working inconsistently;
  • cooling (radiator, pump, thermostat);
  • DPF (thermal versions only);
  • on electric Avenger, software bugs, charging and air conditioning ;
  • from 2025, an official Stellantis recall due to the risk of fuel leaks on the 1.2 turbo petrol engine.

In this guide, I'll explain the symptoms, probable causes, solutions, and realistic costs in a concrete way, with the perspective of someone who actually uses and repairs these cars every day.

1) 1.2 PureTech engine: belt, chain and known critical issues

On the Jeep Avenger we find the three-cylinder 1.2 turbo petrol engine from the Stellantis family, in its various evolutions:

  • petrol-only versions 1.2 100 HP with still belt-driven oil bath distribution (in some markets);
  • mild-hybrid versions 1.2 e-Hybrid / 4xe with the new third-generation 1.2 chain-driven engine .

The problems we see in the workshop can be summarized as follows:

  • premature belt wear (old series) with risk of oil contamination;
  • distribution noise even on some chain versions if the oil is not treated;
  • engine warning lights and error codes related to the timing;
  • from 2025, recall for high pressure fuel pipe (see dedicated section below).

Typical symptoms (1.2 petrol / mild hybrid versions)

  • abnormal noises on the distribution side (ticking, metallic “rustling” when cold);
  • engine light on and protection mode;
  • drop in performance, engine more “rough” at low revs;
  • in diagnosis, timing errors (P0012, P0015, P0016/P0017 on the latest generations).

2) Engine oil leaks and seepage

On Jeep Avenger with internal combustion engines , small oil leaks and seepages in specific areas are not uncommon:

  • valve cover (gasket that hardens over time);
  • oil pan/crankcase junction ;
  • crankshaft or gearbox shaft oil seals ;
  • oil return pipes and fittings.

Often the problem starts as a simple oil stain and is underestimated, but over time it can lead to:

  • drop in level to minimum;
  • smell of burnt oil (if it goes down the exhaust);
  • dirt spread on engine cradle and rubber components.

Practical tip: Always have the lower end of the engine visually inspected at every service, as well as the skid plate, gearbox, and axle shafts for oil. Finding a leak when it's small can save you a lot of money.

3) Start & Stop: recurring malfunctions

We receive many reports of the following issues with the Jeep Avenger's Start&Stop system (especially the mild-hybrid):

  • Start&Stop that never comes into operation;
  • irregular shutdowns or slow restarts at traffic lights;
  • Messages like: “Start&Stop not available. Recharge battery” even when the battery appears to be OK.

In most cases, the cause is not a “mysterious electronic failure” but:

  • EFB/AGM battery flat or unsuitable for the system;
  • insufficient charge level (urban use only, many short journeys);
  • environmental sensors (temperature, climate control, seat belt, doors) that block the system for protection logic;
  • software that needs to be updated at the dealership .

JEEP AVENGER – START&STOP SYSTEM PROBLEMS

Many owners report malfunctions with the Jeep Avenger's Start & Stop system : failure to activate, erratic shutdowns, a weak auxiliary battery, misaligned sensors, and unstable electronics. Here are the actual causes, symptoms, and solutions.

4) Cooling system: leaks and overheating

On some thermal Jeep Avenger we recorded:

  • micro-leaks from the radiator (often visible as whitish or pinkish halos);
  • noisy or slightly leaky water pump after a few years;
  • thermostatic valve that remains partially open or closed, with incorrect temperature management.

Symptoms not to be underestimated:

  • fan that starts often even when the air conditioning is off;
  • temperature rising in the queue or on the way up;
  • liquid level dropping without obvious leaks (there may be evaporation from hot spots or minimal leaks).

JEEP AVENGER – COOLING SYSTEM PROBLEMS

Overheating, coolant leaks, a delayed fan start, and unstable thermal management: these are the most common problems with the Jeep Avenger's cooling system and how to fix them correctly.

5) DPF (thermal versions): clogging in urban use

In the thermal and mild-hybrid versions, city driving with short journeys creates the ideal conditions for the DPF (particulate filter) to clog :

  • regenerations that are not completed;
  • gradual increase in exhaust back pressure;
  • increased consumption and decreased performance.

Typical symptoms:

  • DPF warning light or messages related to anti-pollution systems;
  • engine “clogged” and noisy;
  • fan that continues to run even after switching off (frequent regenerations).

6) Electric Jeep Avenger: software, charging, and climate control issues

For the electric Jeep Avenger, the issues have changed: no belt, no DPF, but more electronics and software . Customer experiences and long-distance tests highlight above all:

  • refusal to start charging in AC or DC, often resolved with software updates;
  • multiple warning lights and messages on the dashboard for temporary electronic errors;
  • air conditioning problems (air that doesn't cool or heat properly);
  • need for “reflash” or updates at the dealership to stabilize control units and infotainment.

Here the advice is different than for the thermal versions:

  • always keep the software up to date (campaigns and official network updates);
  • note precisely when and how problems arise (type of charging station, outside temperature, battery percentage);
  • Avoid improvisation on domestic electrical systems: for fixed charging, a properly installed wallbox is better.

7) 2025 Recall of 1.2 turbo petrol engine (fire risk)

In 2025, Stellantis initiated an official recall for numerous 2023–2025 vehicles equipped with a 1.2 turbo petrol engine (including the Jeep Avenger), due to a possible fuel leak on the high-pressure pipe between the pump and the rail, caused by nuts that can loosen over time.

The risk, in the worst cases, is:

  • abnormal fuel consumption ;
  • smell of gasoline in the hood area;
  • possible fire in the engine compartment if fuel spills on very hot parts.

What does the recall include?

  • check the high pressure pipe (between pump and rail);
  • check and restore the tightening torque of the nuts or, if necessary, replace the component;
  • intervention in the official Stellantis/Jeep network , at no cost to the customer as part of the campaign.

What you need to do right away if you have a Jeep Avenger 1.2 (2023–2025)

  • check using your vehicle identification number (VIN) to see if your vehicle is affected by the recall (by contacting your Jeep dealer or Jeep assistance);
  • book a check-up even if you don't have symptoms;
  • If you smell petrol , notice droplets or see unusual smoke coming from the bonnet: stop the car immediately , do not continue driving and contact emergency services.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

What are the most common Jeep Avenger problems?

On the internal combustion/mild-hybrid versions: 1.2 timing belt (older series), oil leaks , inconsistent Start&Stop , cooling and DPF . On the electric versions: mostly software bugs, charging and air conditioning .

Does the electric version have different defects?

Yes. Since it doesn't have a belt, engine oil, or DPF, problems are most often related to electronics, infotainment, charging, and climate control . Many are resolved with software updates at the dealership.

Are there any official recalls for the Jeep Avenger 1.2 turbo?

Yes. Starting in 2025, Stellantis has activated a recall due to a risk of fuel leaks from the high-pressure pipe on 1.2 turbo engines produced approximately between 2023 and 2025. You must check your VIN on the official Jeep network to find out if your car is affected.

How much does it cost to replace the belt on a 1.2 PureTech?

On average, €650–€1,000 with timing belt kit, oil, filters, and labor, depending on the area and type of workshop. On many mild-hybrid Avenger models, the new 1.2 engine is chain -driven, so the situation is different: oil quality and compliance with recalls are crucial.

How can I prevent DPF clogging?

Alternate city driving with extra-urban stretches of at least 20–30 minutes, use good quality diesel , respect the service intervals and have the saturation level checked by a diagnostics service when warning lights or abnormal consumption appear.

📌 Conclusions

The Jeep Avenger is a modern B-SUV, with engines that cover a wide range of needs (from the electric city car to the mild-hybrid petrol engine). As is often the case with younger models, however, recurring defects emerge over time that are best known in advance.

With careful maintenance , attention to recalls and software updates , and timely diagnosis at the first symptoms (noises, warning lights, fuel odors), the Jeep Avenger experience can remain positive while avoiding the most costly hassles.

Bella roba ! Nuova in garanzia ! Come potrò mai più guidare tranquilla ??
