WYNN'S 3-STEP PROTOCOL: HOW TO CLEAN ENGINE, COOLING SYSTEM, AND OIL BEFORE SERVICE

Updated 2026 – Technical guide based on real workshop experience with Wynn's.

When a car starts to consume more fuel than usual, smoke slightly, or overheat more in traffic, the first instinct is to think of a serious breakdown. In most cases, the real problem is much simpler: the engine is dirty inside. Sludge in the oil, deposits on cylinder walls, limescale and rust in the cooling system.

No one ever tells you, but a modern engine — especially diesel and turbo petrol — accumulates internal dirt much faster than you might think. And a service done on a dirty engine is a half-hearted service.

In this article, I will explain the Wynn's 3-step protocol that we use and recommend: three specific products to apply in the correct order, before and during the service, to restore the engine to the internal cleanliness it should have. This is the same procedure adopted by many specialized workshops, and one that you can also do if you are a DIY mechanic.

⚠️ 1. WHY THE ENGINE GETS DIRTY INTERNALLY (AND NO ONE TELLS YOU)

Every time the engine runs, three things happen simultaneously:

  • Oil degrades and leaves sludge and carbon deposits on the crankcase walls, pistons, and lubrication channels
  • Coolant loses additives and begins to deposit limescale, rust, and gel in the radiator, hoses, and engine block
  • Combustion gases and blow-by dirty the EGR valve, intake manifold, and combustion chamber

In modern cars, especially with start&stop systems, short journeys, and long-life oil, this process is accelerated. The result is an engine that, even with regular servicing, accumulates internal dirt to the point of generating:

  • Increased fuel consumption (up to +5/10%)
  • Progressive loss of power
  • Overheating in summer traffic
  • Oil that gets "dirty" much sooner than expected mileage
  • Intermittent engine warning lights without clear errors
💡 Workshop tip: replacing oil over existing sludge is like taking a shower without soap. The new oil gets contaminated within a few hundred kilometers. The same applies to coolant: if you only change the fluid without cleaning the circuit, you're back to square one after a year.

That's why — when an engine starts to show the first signs — a well-executed internal cleaning protocol is worth more than a standard service. To learn more about engine sludge: ENGINE SLUDGE: WHAT IT IS, WHY IT FORMS, AND HOW TO PREVENT SERIOUS DAMAGE.

🧴 2. PHASE 1 – WYNN'S W47244 ENGINE FLUSH (BEFORE OIL CHANGE)

The first step of the protocol is the engine flush: a professional cleaner that is poured into the old oil before draining it. The engine is run at idle for about 10-15 minutes, then everything is drained, and a normal oil change is performed.

What it actually does

  • Dissolves black sludge on the internal walls of the crankcase and cylinder head
  • Cleans clogged lubrication channels
  • Removes deposits on pistons and under rocker arms
  • Frees the oil pump and suction strainer

When it really makes sense

  • Cars with over 80,000 km never treated
  • Cars used mainly in urban areas / short trips
  • Before switching to a more "aggressive" synthetic oil on deposits
  • Purchase of a used car with unknown maintenance history
  • Increasing oil consumption without visible leaks

How to use (correct procedure)

  1. Bring the engine to operating temperature (at least 70°C)
  2. Switch off and pour the entire bottle into the oil filler cap (on hot oil)
  3. Start the engine and let it idle for 10-15 minutes (never under load, never while driving)
  4. Switch off and immediately proceed with oil drain + filter replacement
  5. Refill with new oil of the correct specification for your car
⚠️ Common mistake: many pour the flush and then drive for a couple of kilometers. Do not do this. The product should be allowed to work at idle, because under load, internal pressures can move dissolved deposits to delicate areas.

❄️ 3. PHASE 2 – WYNN'S W45944 COOLING SYSTEM CLEANER (BEFORE FLUID CHANGE)

The cooling system is the most neglected area of the engine. Coolant should be replaced every 4-5 years or 60,000-80,000 km, but almost no one ever checks the internal condition of the circuit.

Result: after a few years, you find limescale in the hoses, rust in the radiator, gelatinous sediments in the thermostat. All elements that reduce heat exchange and cause your car to overheat in summer traffic.

What W45944 actually does

  • Removes limescale and mineral deposits from the radiator and engine block
  • Dissolves rust at metallic contact points
  • Eliminates residues of old degraded fluid and gel
  • Frees the thermostat from encrustations that block it in intermediate positions
  • Cleans the cabin heater core (effect: warmer heating in winter)

Symptoms that say "do this cleaning"

  • Engine temperature rises abnormally in traffic or congestion
  • Ineffective cabin heating in winter
  • Brown, opaque, or flaky coolant
  • Swollen or excessively soft hoses to the touch
  • Car over 6 years old never treated internally

How to use

  1. With a cold engine, check that the level in the expansion tank is normal
  2. Pour the product into the expansion tank (follow dosage on label)
  3. Start the engine and let it run at operating temperature for 20-30 minutes with the cabin heater at maximum
  4. Switch off, wait for complete cooling
  5. Drain the old fluid + rinse with demineralized water
  6. Fill with new coolant of the correct specification (G11, G12, G13 depending on manufacturer)
  7. Bleed air from the circuit (model-specific procedure)
💡 From the workshop: on engines with recurring cooling problems, we often see that the thermostat "seems" faulty but is actually just blocked by deposits. Cleaning with W45944 before replacing expensive components can save you €200-€300.

🛢️ 4. PHASE 3 – WYNN'S W74944 ENGINE OIL ADDITIVE (AFTER REFILL)

Once the engine has been flushed and the oil changed, the third step is to protect and optimize the new oil. W74944 is an additive that is poured directly into the freshly added oil and works for the duration of the next service interval.

What W74944 does

  • Improves anti-wear protection at high temperatures
  • Reduces internal friction between moving parts (pistons, bearings, shafts)
  • Stabilizes the oil film under load
  • Limits oil consumption in engines that consume oil slightly
  • Reduces noise and ticking when the engine is warm (useful for engines with timing chains)

When it makes the most sense to use it

  • Engines over 100,000 km
  • Cars that consume a little oil between service intervals
  • Engines with slight noise (tappets, chains, power steering)
  • Vehicles with heavy use (continuous highway driving, towing, mountain driving)
  • Immediately after an internal cleaning treatment like this one

📅 5. WHEN TO APPLY THE COMPLETE PROTOCOL

The Wynn's 3-step protocol is not something to do every month. It is a strategic intervention that makes sense at specific times in a car's life.

Recommended frequency

Type of Use Protocol Frequency
Mainly urban use / short trips Every 30,000 km
Mixed city-extra-urban use Every 40,000-50,000 km
Mainly highway use Every 60,000 km
Recently purchased used car (unknown history) Immediately, regardless of mileage

Signs that say "it's time now"

  • Increased consumption without apparent cause
  • Less responsive engine during acceleration
  • Temperature rising more than usual in summer
  • Oil drained very black even shortly after service
  • Small noises when the engine is warm
  • Just bought a used car you don't trust

💰 6. COSTS: WORKSHOP VS. DIY

The real advantage of the Wynn's protocol is the cost/benefit ratio: a few euros of product can prevent interventions costing hundreds of euros later on.

Item In workshop DIY (with Tritella products)
W47244 Engine flush €40-€60 (product + labor) ~€10-€15 product only
W45944 Cooling system cleaning €80-€120 ~€12-€18 product only
W74944 Oil additive €25-€40 ~€10-€14 product only
Total protocol €145-€220 ~€32-€47

Indicative prices. Consult the Autoricambi Tritella additive catalog for updated prices.

💡 The right logic: the protocol should be combined with scheduled service. If you need to change oil and coolant anyway, adding Wynn's products costs only a few extra euros but radically changes the final result of the intervention.

❓ FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Can I use all three Wynn's products together on the same day?

Yes, in fact, that's the ideal sequence. First, the engine flush (during oil change), then the cooling system cleaning (during coolant change), and finally, the oil additive is added to the new oil. All in one maintenance session.

Is Wynn's engine flush safe for high-mileage cars?

Yes, it is formulated to be compatible with gaskets and oil seals. However, on engines with over 200,000 km, it's good practice to first check for existing oil leaks: in that case, the condition of the gaskets should be checked before evaluating the treatment.

Can I clean the cooling system without draining the fluid?

No, it wouldn't make sense. The product lifts and dissolves deposits: if you don't drain the fluid at the end, these impurities will remain in circulation. The correct protocol is always: cleaning → complete drainage → rinsing → new fluid.

Does Wynn's oil additive alter the specifications of the original oil?

No, it is formulated to be compatible with the most common specifications (ACEA, API, manufacturers). It does not significantly alter viscosity or certifications. It is designed to integrate with modern synthetic oil.

How often can I repeat the complete protocol?

The oil additive lasts as long as the service interval (so it should be redone with every oil change if you want continuity). Engine flushing and cooling system cleaning are done at different frequencies: see the table in the "When to apply the protocol" section.

Does it also work on turbocharged cars?

Yes. In fact, on turbo engines (both gasoline and diesel), internal cleaning is even more important because operating temperatures are higher and deposits form more rapidly, especially on the oil side of the turbo.

📌 CONCLUSION

A clean engine consumes less, lasts longer, runs cooler, and won't leave you stranded at the worst times. The Wynn's 3-step protocol is not a miracle solution, but it is one of the most cost-effective preventive maintenance interventions available on the market today.

The rule to remember is simple:

  • Before oil change → Wynn's W47244 (engine flush)
  • Before coolant change → Wynn's W45944 (cooling system cleaner)
  • Immediately after refilling with new oil → Wynn's W74944 (oil additive)

All three products are available in the Autoricambi Tritella additives catalog with fast shipping throughout Italy. If you have any doubts about which procedure is best suited for your car, contact us: we will give you honest advice based on mileage, usage, and engine type.

The difference between an engine that lasts 200,000 km and one that lasts 350,000 km often lies not in expensive overhauls, but in how well it has been kept clean inside. And that's something you can control.
