DACIA SANDERO: MOST COMMON PROBLEMS, DEFECTS AND FAILURES FROM 2014 TO TODAY

Updated 2026 – Technical analysis based on real workshop cases and Renault/Dacia service data.

Quick answer

The most common problems of the Dacia Sandero (2014-2025) concern five areas: stiff manual gearbox when cold (due to degraded oil or selector cables), unstable electronics and infotainment (over 60% of cases are 12V batteries below 12.4V), LPG system with reducer to be replaced at 80-100,000 km, suspensions with worn top mount bearings after 60,000 km, and CVT gearbox to be serviced every 60,000 km. Typical costs: €80-€2,500.

The Dacia Sandero is Europe's best-selling car for value for money, but it is not without flaws. In over ten years of production — from the second generation in 2014 to the mild hybrid versions of 2025 — we have seen a series of recurring problems in workshops that repeat regardless of the year and engine.

Some are simple to solve and inexpensive. Others, if ignored, become costly. In this guide, you'll find everything you need to know: real symptoms, technical causes, average costs, and links to specific insights for each problem.

📊 1. HOW RELIABLE IS THE DACIA SANDERO REALLY?

The Sandero has a solid reputation, and for the most part, it's well-deserved. The mechanics we collaborate with describe it as a car that is easy to repair, with inexpensive parts and few critical systems — at least until the 2020 versions. From the third generation (launched in 2021 onwards) with the CMF-B platform, electronic complexity has increased, and with it, certain types of failures.

Data from partner Dacia/Renault workshops show that most interventions focus on four areas: onboard electronics, LPG system, manual gearbox, and suspension. These are not serious structural defects, but predictable critical issues that, if known in advance, can be managed without surprises. In Euro NCAP tests, the Sandero III (2021) achieved 2 out of 5 stars with basic equipment — it's good to know this before purchasing.

💡 From our 15 years of workshop experience: the Sandero is a car that rewards good maintenance. Those who skip services or neglect the battery and gearbox oil end up paying for interventions that they would never have needed with a little prevention.

⚠️ 2. WHAT ARE THE MOST COMMON PROBLEMS BY AREA?

This table summarizes the most reported defects on the Sandero, indicating their severity and the average intervention cost updated to May 2026:

Area Typical Problem Severity Average Cost
Infotainment Lag, reboots, unstable CarPlay 🟡 Low €0–80 (update)
12V Battery Unstable voltage, multiple errors 🟡 Medium €80–160 (replacement)
Manual Gearbox JR5/JH3 Stiff shifts, hard to engage gears 🟡 Medium €120–900
CVT Gearbox (X-Tronic) Jerking, slipping, overheating 🔴 High €800–2,500
Eco-G LPG System Sudden switching, reducer issues 🟠 Medium-High €150–600
Suspension Harsh bumps, bearings, silent block 🟡 Medium €80–400
LPG Tank Welding defects (official recall 2023-2025) 🔴 High Covered by recall
Alternator Insufficient charging, battery light 🟠 Medium-High €300–600
Cabin Noise Wind noise, creaks, resonances 🟢 Low €0–250

🖥️ 3. WHY DO ELECTRONICS, INFOTAINMENT AND ADAS GIVE ERRORS?

The Sandero's electronics have undergone a true generational evolution. Versions up to 2020 have simple electronics and few serious problems. From the third generation (2021 onwards) with the CMF-B platform, the arrival of ADAS, connected Media Display, and mild hybrid (from 2024) has introduced new types of failures.

What are the most frequent symptoms?

  • Slow infotainment, screen freezing or restarting
  • Android Auto / CarPlay disconnecting
  • Intermittent ADAS messages or systems deactivated without apparent reason
  • Parking sensors with false alarms
  • Multiple errors at startup that disappear after a few minutes
  • Typical diagnostic codes: U0100, U0101, U0073 (CAN-bus communication errors related to low voltage)

What is the most underestimated cause? The 12V battery

A high percentage of electronic problems on the Sandero — we estimate over 60% of cases that arrive in the workshop — are not due to an actual module failure, but to unstable or insufficient battery voltage. A battery below 12.4V at rest can generate cascading errors on infotainment, ADAS, and control units, all of which are likely to disappear after a recharge or replacement.

⚠️ Before taking the car to the workshop for electronic problems: measure the battery voltage with the engine off (it should be ≥ 12.5V) and check the installation year. If it is more than 4 years old, perform a real capacity test — a voltmeter is not enough.

🔧 4. WHAT PROBLEMS DOES THE GEARBOX (MANUAL, CVT) AND TIMING BELT HAVE?

Manual gearbox: why does it stiffen when cold?

This is the most reported problem on Sanderos with manual gearbox, across all generations (JR5, JH3, and TL4 gearboxes). It manifests especially when cold, with stiff shifts in the first gears and difficulty engaging reverse. In the vast majority of cases, the cause is not in the synchronizers, but in three simple elements to check:

  • Degraded or unsuitable gearbox oil — the 75W-80 GL-4+ synthetic specific to Renault/Dacia is mandatory, not optional. Replacement is recommended every 60,000 km in normal use, advanced to 40,000 km in intense urban use.
  • Selector cables out of adjustment — they wear out and lose their original calibration after 70-80,000 km.
  • Worn engine/gearbox mounts — they transmit vibrations and misalign the lever.

CVT Gearbox: what to check after 60,000 km?

Versions with automatic CVT gearbox (X-Tronic Renault-Nissan, available only on Sandero III 1.0 TCe 90 HP from 2021) show abnormal behavior after 60-80,000 km if the oil has not been replaced. Jerking during acceleration, slipping, and overheating are signals not to be ignored — the CVT is the most expensive component to repair on the entire car, with interventions that can exceed €2,500 in case of a complete replacement.

Correct maintenance involves a complete flush of the CVT oil every 60,000 km (not just top-up), using specific NS-3 type oil or equivalent multi-brand oil. Skipping this intervention is the #1 cause of CVT failure before 150,000 km.

Timing belt: when should it be replaced?

The 1.0 TCe (3-cylinder petrol/Eco-G) and 1.5 dCi diesel engines have a timing belt. The official interval is 100,000-120,000 km or 6 years, but in intense urban use — with many cold starts — it is prudent to anticipate this to 80-90,000 km. A broken belt means a destroyed engine: the cost of preventive replacement (€250-450) is always better than a failure (€3,000-5,000).

⛽ 5. IS THE ECO-G LPG SYSTEM RELIABLE? WHAT MAINTENANCE IS NEEDED?

The Bi-Fuel (petrol + LPG) and ECO-G 100 versions are among the best-selling Sanderos in Italy due to their low running costs (fuel savings estimated at 30-40% compared to petrol only). The factory-fitted Dacia LPG system is generally reliable, but requires specific periodic maintenance that many owners neglect.

What are the signs of an LPG system starting to have problems?

  • Sudden switch from LPG to petrol with a full tank
  • Difficult cold start or unstable idle in the first few minutes
  • Loss of power during acceleration with the engine running on gas
  • Engine warning light with codes P0171 (lean mixture) or P0172 (rich mixture)
  • Code P2293 (fuel pressure regulation out of range): typical of a reducer failing
  • Slight gas smell during startup

What are the most common causes?

The LPG reducer is the component that wears out first: after 80-100,000 km the membranes harden and the pressure becomes unstable. Preventive replacement around this threshold is the most economical way to avoid sudden failures. Equally important is the periodic update of the LPG ECU map, which optimizes petrol/gas switching and reduces consumption. Also not to be overlooked are the liquid and gaseous phase LPG filters, which should be replaced every 20-30,000 km.

🛞 6. WHAT CAUSES NOISE AND KNOCKS IN THE SUSPENSION?

Sharp knocks over bumps and cobblestones, creaks when cornering, heavy steering when cold: these are the most common symptoms on Sandero Stepway after 50-60,000 km, but they can also appear earlier on particularly uneven roads. Due to their higher ride height, Stepways show about 15-20% earlier wear compared to standard Sandero models.

Typical causes and quick diagnosis

  • Shock absorber top mount bearings — they harden over time (typically after 60-80,000 km) and transmit every irregularity to the cabin
  • Wishbone silent blocks — when deformed, they create play and characteristic noise, especially when braking
  • Anti-roll bar — dry bushings and joints generate typical sharp knocks on slow, low-speed corners

A test on a lift with a dynamic shaker test allows the exact component to be identified in a few minutes, avoiding unnecessary replacements. In most cases, it is sufficient to intervene on bearings or silent blocks — not the entire shock absorber, saving €200-300 per axle.

📅 7. WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE 2014-2025 GENERATIONS?

Not all Sandero models behave the same way. The generation they belong to radically changes the risk profile.

Generation Strengths Main Criticisms
2014–2017
SCe / dCi
Simple electronics, inexpensive spare parts, very easy to repair 1.2 16V oil consumption above 120,000 km, diesel EGR, door seals
2018–2020
TCe / dCi / GPL
More modern engines, improved LPG Unstable Media Nav, stiff Stepway, clutch cables to be monitored
2021–2023
TCe / ECO-G 100
Mature CMF-B platform, improved ADAS, optimized ECO-G LPG Greater electronic complexity, ADAS sensitive to 12V battery
2024–2025
TCe mild hybrid
Better soundproofing, OTA updates, improved fuel consumption Mild hybrid sensitive to 12V battery, Start&Stop logic needs calibration
💡 Used car buying advice: the best compromise between reliability and modernity is the 2021-2023 ECO-G 100. The CMF-B platform is now established, the LPG is stable, and the electronics are modern but without the complexities of the mild hybrid introduced from 2024.

❓ FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Is the Dacia Sandero reliable?

Yes, on average for the B-segment. Versions up to 2020 have simple electronics and very few structural problems. More recent versions with the CMF-B platform (from 2021) are more complex but still reliable if well-maintained. The main issue from 2024 onwards is the mild hybrid's sensitivity to the 12V battery.

What is the most common fault on the Sandero?

The most frequently reported problem is a stiff manual gearbox when cold, followed by infotainment instability. In both cases, the main cause is often trivial: degraded gearbox oil (75W-80 GL-4+) in the first case, and a 12V battery below 12.4V in the second.

Is the Eco-G LPG version as reliable as the petrol version?

Yes, if the specific maintenance for the gas system is respected. The critical point is the LPG reducer, which should be preventively replaced around 80-100,000 km. LPG filters should be changed every 20-30,000 km. With regular maintenance, the running costs of the LPG version are 30-40% lower than petrol.

Which year of used Sandero is best to buy?

The best compromise is a 2021-2023 ECO-G 100 or TCe. The CMF-B platform is now well-established, the problems of the early series have been corrected, and the ECO-G LPG system is more stable compared to previous versions. Avoid the early 2021 Stepways which had some initial issues with silent blocks.

How much does annual maintenance for a Sandero cost?

On average between €400 and €700 annually, including servicing, tires, and minor interventions. The LPG version has much lower fuel costs but also requires periodic maintenance of the gas system (filter, map calibration, reducer check) which adds about €80-150 per year.

How many kilometers can a Dacia Sandero travel?

With regular maintenance, a petrol or LPG Sandero can easily reach 250,000-300,000 km. Diesel 1.5 dCi models often exceed 350,000 km. The most frequent issues beyond 150,000 km are clutch, LPG reducer, and suspension bearings — all predictable and manageable interventions.

Where can I find spare parts for the Dacia Sandero?

On Autoricambi Tritella you will find original and compatible spare parts for all Sandero generations (2014-2025): Valvoline 75W GL-4 gearbox oil, LPG filters, clutch kits, shock absorbers, batteries, and much more. Fast delivery throughout Italy. For specific spare parts, you can also request a free quote.

📌 CONCLUSION

The Dacia Sandero remains one of the most rational choices on the market for purchase, running, and maintenance costs. Problems do exist—as with any car—but most are predictable, well-documented, and not particularly expensive if addressed promptly.

The golden rule we repeat in the workshop is simple: battery in good condition (≥ 12.5V), gearbox oil replaced regularly (75W-80 GL-4+ every 60,000 km), LPG system checked annually. Those who follow these three points rarely encounter major interventions.
