CITROËN C3 (2024-2026) PROBLEMS: ETG, eDCT6 HYBRID, PURETECH, ADAS AND INFOTAINMENT

📅 Updated May 4, 2026 — By Gianni Tritella, General Manager Autoricambi Tritella. Technical analysis based on over 15 years of experience in the spare parts sector and on real cases of fourth-generation Citroën C3s (1.2 PureTech 83 HP, 1.2 Hybrid 100 HP, ë-C3 electric 113 HP) serviced at Tritella network partner workshops in Abruzzo, Marche and Lazio since their launch in September 2024 to date.

Quick answer

The fourth-generation Citroën C3 (Stellantis Smart Car platform, produced in Trnava, Slovakia from September 2024) presents 5 recurring critical areas: 1) ETG robotized gearbox with jerks below 30 km/h on 1.2 PureTech 83 HP versions; 2) eDCT6 gearbox on the Hybrid with jolts and protection mode blocks (first series 2024); 3) 1.2 PureTech engine 3rd generation with oil consumption up to 0.5 L/1,000 km; 4) Citroën Connect Box 10.25" infotainment with freezes and CarPlay disconnections; 5) ADAS too intrusive in initial calibrations. Approximately 70% of software problems are resolved with free updates at dealerships. Repair costs: from €0 (warranty updates) up to €2,000-€2,400 for eDCT6 clutch replacement.

The fourth-generation Citroën C3 is the Double Chevron's first compact car built on Stellantis' new Smart Car platform, shared with the Fiat Grande Panda, Opel Frontera and Jeep Avenger. Launched in Italy in September 2024, it is already one of the best-selling city cars: over 38,700 registrations in Italy in 2025 (source UNRAE), first in the B-segment for compact cars since February 2025.

In this CORE guide, we analyze all the real problems that emerged between 2024 and 2026, the technical criticalities for each engine, the repair costs in independent workshops versus the official Stellantis network, and links to dedicated in-depth analyses for each specific problem.

📊 Citroën C3 Market Figures and Versions

To properly frame the problems, it's useful to start with the actual figures. The fourth-generation Citroën C3 (project code CC24) entered Italian price lists on September 3, 2024 with 3 engine options:

  • 1.2 PureTech 83 HP (61 kW) — 5-speed manual or ETG robotized gearbox, the best-selling version in the Italian mix (~52% in 2025)
  • 1.2 PureTech Hybrid 100 HP (74 kW) — eDCT6 dual-clutch gearbox, 48V mild hybrid, ~33% of the mix
  • ë-C3 electric 113 HP (83 kW) — 44 kWh LFP battery, WLTP range 320 km, ~15% of the mix

Sales data speaks for itself: 14,246 registrations in Italy in Q4 2024, 38,706 in 2025 (with a peak of 4,821 units in March 2025), and Q1 2026 data in line with 2025 despite a general Stellantis market decline of -12%. The C3 became the best-selling city car in Italy from February 2025.

On the Model Year and software side: the MY2025 brought ETG gearbox software version 1.4.2 (vs original launch 1.2.x), the MY2026 introduced in September 2025 with eDCT6 calibration version 2.1.x reduced reports of jerking by ~65% compared to the first series.

🎯 Is the Citroën C3 2024-2026 reliable?

The short answer: the basic mechanics are solid, but the first 2024 series showed recurring software problems. From our experience, out of approximately 140 new generation Citroën C3s serviced at Tritella partner workshops in the first 18 months of market presence, reports focus on 3 macro-areas:

  • ~38% gearbox reports (ETG on basic petrol, eDCT6 on Hybrid)
  • ~28% infotainment reports and connectivity
  • ~19% ADAS reports (intrusive calibrations)
  • ~15% others (suspension, drum brakes, cold steering, oil consumption)

The positive data: 71% of problems found in the first 2024 series were resolved with free software updates at official Citroën dealerships, without mechanical interventions. The MY2026 series in production since September 2025 show a halved intervention rate compared to the launch MY2025.

💡 From our workshop experience: before considering mechanical interventions on the C3, always check the software version of the gearbox (ETG or eDCT6), infotainment (Citroën Connect Box) and ADAS module. Often a free update resolves 70% of reported symptoms.

⚙️ What are the problems with the ETG gearbox on the Citroën C3?

The ETG (Efficient Tronic Gearbox) fitted on the C3 1.2 PureTech 83 HP is a 5-speed automated manual gearbox: mechanically it is a manual, but clutch operation and gear selection are managed by two electromechanical actuators controlled by the TCU (Transmission Control Unit). It is not a traditional automatic, nor a dual-clutch: it is a simple robotized gearbox, conceptually similar to the old Alfa Romeo Selespeed but of a new generation.

What symptoms does the ETG gearbox present when it has problems?

The symptoms we most frequently receive in the workshop are:

  • Jerking between 1st and 2nd gear in stop-and-go traffic, especially below 30 km/h
  • Hesitation of 0.8-1.5 seconds during upshifts
  • "Torque void" sensation when releasing the accelerator with a gear engaged
  • Failure to engage reverse gear when cold (rare, only pre-March 2025 batches)
  • "AUTO" blinking light on the cluster with generic TCU DTC code P0700

What DTC codes appear on the C3's ETG?

DTC Code Meaning Frequency
P0700 Generic TCU error, requires further investigation High (42%)
P0810 Clutch position control error Medium (24%)
P0888 TCU power supply voltage out of range Medium (18%)
U0101 Lost communication TCU-ECU Low (10%)

How are ETG gearbox problems resolved?

In 78% of reported cases, the solution is a software update of the TCU control unit to the latest version (minimum 1.4.2, ideal 2.0.x introduced in October 2025). The intervention is free at official Citroën service centers if the vehicle is under warranty and takes approximately 30-45 minutes.

If the problem persists after the update, 22% of cases require:

  • Clutch adaptive reset and on-road learning procedure (15-20 minutes)
  • Clutch actuator replacement (code 2231.JK) — cost €400-€700 for part + labor
  • Complete clutch kit replacement in severe cases — intervention €1,200-€1,500

🔄 Why does the C3 Hybrid's eDCT6 gearbox have problems?

The Citroën C3 Hybrid 100 HP features a 6-speed dry dual-clutch eDCT6 gearbox developed by Punch Powertrain in collaboration with Stellantis. It integrates a small 21 kW electric motor between the gearbox and the internal combustion engine, powered by a 0.9 kWh 48V lithium-ion battery. It is the same gearbox as the Fiat Grande Panda Hybrid and the Jeep Avenger e-Hybrid.

What jolts does the eDCT6 gearbox present?

The most recurring reports for the early 2024-Q1 2025 series are:

  • Jerking on starting from a standstill, especially uphill
  • Failure of the internal combustion engine to switch off in hybrid mode below 30 km/h
  • Block in protection mode with "Hybrid Service" message on the cluster
  • Abrupt shifts between 2nd and 3rd gear when releasing the accelerator
  • Vibrations at the steering wheel at 1,500-1,800 rpm

What are the technical causes of eDCT6 problems?

  • Original TCU software (version 1.0.x from the September 2024 launch) with overly aggressive clutch management strategy
  • Clutch adaptives not realigned after updates or 12V battery replacement
  • Clutch position sensors with borderline tolerances on pre-April 2025 batches
  • Overheating of dry clutches in intense urban use (DTC P181B) — the dry dual clutch is not optimal for heavy stop-and-go traffic

How are eDCT6 Hybrid gearbox problems resolved?

  1. TCU update to version 2.1.x (released November 2025, MY2026) — resolves ~65% of symptoms
  2. Adaptive reset and clutch learning on the road — 25-30 minute procedure with a professional scanner
  3. 48V mild hybrid battery check: cell voltage, actual capacity
  4. In rare cases: dry dual clutch replacement (code 2231.MR) — intervention €1,700-€2,400

🛢️ Does the 1.2 PureTech engine consume too much oil?

The 1.2 PureTech third generation (engine code EB2ADTS) is the updated version of the Stellantis engine notoriously known for problems with the oil-immersed timing belt of the first two generations. On the fourth-generation C3, it uses version 3 with a metallic timing chain (replacing the oil-immersed belt), but the history of high oil consumption is inherited from its predecessor.

How much oil does the PureTech 3 consume in the Citroën C3?

Based on data collected from Tritella customers in the first 18 months of commercial life:

  • Average consumption: 0.2-0.4 L per 1,000 km in the first 20,000 km
  • "Stellantis limit" consumption: up to 0.5 L/1,000 km is considered acceptable under warranty
  • Abnormal consumption: over 0.7 L/1,000 km — mandatory warranty claim opening
  • Real cases in workshops: ~12% of PureTech C3s required top-ups between services

Which engine oil to use on the Citroën C3 PureTech?

Mandatory specification STJLR.51.5122, i.e., ACEA C2 0W-20 with low SAPS (also approved PSA B71 2312 specification). Capacity 3.7 liters with filter change. Recommended brands distributed by our network:

📡 Are the Citroën C3's ADAS too intrusive?

The C3 2024-2026 comes standard with a Level 1 ADAS package mandatory for EU homologation from July 2024 (GSR2 — General Safety Regulation): automatic emergency braking (AEB), lane keeping assist (LKA), traffic sign recognition (TSR), blind spot monitoring (BSM), and driver drowsiness detection system. The problem is not their presence, but the overly conservative initial calibration on the first 2024 series.

What are the most frequent false alarms on the C3's ADAS?

  • Automatic braking activated on parked cars, guardrails on curves, road signs
  • Lane keeping assist "pulling" the steering wheel on narrow roads or with faded markings
  • Speed limiter recognition with incorrect interpretation of secondary signs (e.g., truck speed limits applied to the car)
  • Blind spot warning activated by guardrails on curves
  • Continuous "driver attention" beeps even after short drives

How to correct intrusive ADAS behavior on the C3?

  1. ADAS module software update to version 3.4.x or higher (released Q3 2025) — reduces false alarms by ~70%
  2. Clean the camera behind the windshield from the inside (rear-view mirror area)
  3. Verify calibration after any windshield or bumper replacement
  4. Manual deactivation of more intrusive individual systems from the settings menu (still possible)
⚠️ According to EU GSR2 regulation: from July 7, 2024, AEB, ISA (intelligent speed assistance) and lane keeping systems must reactivate at each start. Permanent deactivation is not possible for homologation.

🦶 Does the Citroën C3's manual clutch wear out quickly?

On versions with a 5-speed manual gearbox (1.2 PureTech 83 HP), approximately 9% of customers with predominantly urban use have reported a progressive stiffening of the pedal and in some cases slippage already below 30,000 km. The problem primarily concerns:

  • Hydraulic clutch cylinder: progressive pressure loss
  • Pressure plate: accelerated wear with intensive stop-and-go use (the dry clutch is not designed for continuous traffic)
  • Clutch disc: premature wear when driving with a foot resting on the pedal

Cost of complete clutch kit replacement: €500-900 at an independent workshop, €800-1,300 at an official dealership.

🔋 Does the electric ë-C3 have range issues?

The electric ë-C3 features a permanent magnet synchronous motor delivering 83 kW (113 HP) and a 44 kWh nominal LFP (lithium iron phosphate) battery (38.7 kWh usable), manufactured by SVOLT in Slovakia. It is the first Stellantis vehicle with an LFP battery, chosen to reduce costs and improve longevity (5,000+ cycles vs 1,500-2,000 for NMC lithium).

What is the real-world range of the ë-C3?

Condition Declared range Real-world range
WLTP combined 320 km 270-290 km
Urban (mild climate) 310-340 km
Highway 130 km/h 200-230 km
Winter with -5°C climate 180-210 km

LFP batteries are particularly affected by low temperatures: at -5°C/-10°C, the range can decrease by 30-40%, more than NMC lithium (-20-25%). Solution: battery preheating via the Citroën app before departure in winter.

What software problems does the ë-C3 have?

  • "Charging unavailable" error on DC charging stations up to 100 kW (resolved with BMS 1.5.x software, November 2025)
  • Inaccurate trip planning in the navigator (underestimating highway consumption)
  • AC 11 kW charging time: 4h 15min actual (vs 4h declared) from 20% to 80%
  • DC 100 kW charging time: 26 minutes from 20% to 80% (in line with declared)

💰 How much does it cost to repair Citroën C3 problems?

Here are the actual price ranges observed in Tritella network partner workshops in Abruzzo, Marche, and Lazio as of April 2026, including VAT:

Rear drum brakes (complete axle) €130-200 €230-340
Front shock absorbers (pair) €300-440 €540-720
Front top mount + links €180-280 €320-450
ADAS radar+camera calibration €100-150 €180-260

Important technical note: software updates (ETG, eDCT6, ADAS, infotainment gearbox) require official Citroën DiagBox tools and online recognition codes. For these interventions, independent workshops cannot intervene and the official network must always be used (free if under warranty).

For everything else — routine maintenance, 12V battery, suspension, brakes, clutch, consumable spare parts — a specialized independent workshop allows savings of 30-45% with equivalent or superior quality parts (Bosch, Brembo, Valeo, KYB, Lemförder).

🎯 Which Citroën C3 version should you choose?

After 18 months on the market and hundreds of vehicles analyzed, we can provide concrete guidance:

Version Engine Reliability Recommended?
C3 1.2 manual PureTech 83 HP + 5M 🟢 High ✅ Yes, first choice
C3 1.2 ETG PureTech 83 HP + ETG 🟡 Medium ⚠️ Only MY2026 with sw 2.0+
C3 Hybrid PureTech 100 HP + eDCT6 🟡 Medium (MY2026 high) ✅ Yes, MY2026 onwards
ë-C3 electric 113 HP + LFP 44 kWh battery 🟢 High ✅ Yes, for urban use
Our advice: for maximum reliability, the C3 1.2 PureTech 83 HP with 5-speed manual gearbox is the simplest and safest choice – zero electronics in the gearbox, zero surprises. For those who want an automatic, wait for the MY2026 (production from September 2025) with updated gearbox software. The ë-C3 electric is excellent for urban use thanks to the longer-lasting LFP battery, but not recommended for those who do a lot of motorway driving.

❓ Frequently asked questions about Citroën C3 problems

Is the 2024-2026 Citroën C3 reliable?

The basic mechanics (PureTech 3 engine, chassis, suspension, brakes) are solid. Problems focus on the ETG gearbox, first series eDCT6, infotainment, and ADAS. 71% of reported issues are resolved with free software updates at the dealership. MY2026 series have half the intervention rate compared to the launch MY2025.

What is the most common problem on the fourth generation C3?

The ETG robotic gearbox in entry-level petrol versions: jerks and hesitations in the city below 30 km/h are the most reported defect (~38% of total reports). The solution in 78% of cases is a free TCU software update under warranty, not a mechanical replacement.

Is the Hybrid or manual petrol version better?

For predominantly urban use, the C3 Hybrid MY2026 with eDCT6 software 2.1.x is significantly improved and offers real fuel consumption of 4.8-5.4 L/100 km. For those who want maximum simplicity and reliability, the 5-speed manual petrol remains the most solid choice – zero electronics in the gearbox, real fuel consumption 5.8-6.5 L/100 km.

Does the C3's PureTech engine consume too much oil?

The third generation PureTech (code EB2ADTS, with a metal timing chain instead of a belt in oil) is improved over previous versions. Average consumption 0.2-0.4 L/1,000 km, limit threshold 0.5 L/1,000 km under warranty. Oil specification ACEA C2 0W-20 (capacity 3.7 L). Check level every 3,000 km.

Can the C3's ADAS be deactivated?

Partially. According to EU regulation GSR2 of July 7, 2024, AEB, ISA (intelligent speed limiter) and lane keeping systems must reactivate at each startup for homologation. They can be temporarily deactivated from the menu. Before doing so, check if ADAS software update 3.4.x, which reduces false alarms by ~70%, is available.

What is the real range of the ë-C3 electric?

Declared WLTP range: 320 km. Real data collected from customers: 270-290 km mixed, 310-340 km urban mild climate, 200-230 km motorway at 130 km/h, 180-210 km with climate at -5°C. The 44 kWh LFP battery (38.7 kWh usable) is more long-lasting (5,000+ cycles) but suffers in the cold.

Are there official recalls for the new generation Citroën C3?

Yes, at least 3 Stellantis recall campaigns registered up to May 2026:
R04/2025: TCU software on ETG pre-March 2025
R08/2025: Front ADAS sensor wiring
R02/2026: BMS software on ë-C3 for DC charging optimization
Can be verified for free with chassis (VIN) on the Citroën Italia website or through our partner workshop network.

Can I have my C3 serviced outside the Citroën network?

Yes. Thanks to EU regulation 461/2010 (Block Exemption), servicing at an independent workshop does not invalidate the warranty, provided that: spare parts of equivalent quality to the original equipment are used (Bosch, Mahle, Valeo, Mann), manufacturer's specifications are respected (ACEA C2 0W-20 oil), and invoices and technical datasheets are kept. This saves 30-45% compared to the official network.

How long is the Citroën C3 warranty?

Conventional warranty 24 months unlimited mileage on mechanical parts. Warranty 3 years / 100,000 km on electrical/electronic components. For the ë-C3 electric: battery warranty 8 years / 160,000 km with minimum guaranteed capacity loss of 70% (the longest in the electric compact car segment).

📌 Conclusions: should you buy the Citroën C3 today?

The fourth generation Citroën C3 is a modern, well-designed, and competitively priced compact car, with real problems that are mostly manageable—often with free software updates under warranty. The ETG gearbox remains the main weakness on entry-level versions, while the 5M manual and Hybrid MY2026 versions are significantly more stable. The ë-C3 electric with an LFP battery is a solid choice for urban use.

Decision summary:

  1. Prefer MY2026 onwards (production from September 2025) with already updated gearbox software
  2. 5M manual gearbox = maximum reliability, first choice for those who want zero worries
  3. Hybrid eDCT6 only in MY2026 version with sw 2.1.x
  4. Perform a pre-purchase diagnosis with a professional scanner on the gearbox
  5. Verify the closure of all recall campaigns and software updates
  6. For the ë-C3: only if predominantly urban use, avoid if daily motorway driving

For current owners: keep the software updated, monitor the PureTech engine oil level every 3,000 km, and don't wait for gearbox problems to worsen—early intervention always costs less than late intervention.
