⚠️ The three exceptions to remember: the 2.0 TDI 143 hp (CRVC), the 2.0 GTD 200 hp (DTUA), and all GTI Clubsport and Golf R versions use 0W-30 XL-III C3 — not the standard 0W-20. If you have one of these engines and use 0W-20, you are using the wrong specification.
🔵 3. SYNPOWER XL-IV C5 0W-20: THE STANDARD SPECIFICATION
The vast majority of the Golf 8 range — from the 1.0 TSI to the 2.0 TSI GTI 265 hp, including all TDI 116/150 hp and all eTSI mild-hybrid versions — uses Valvoline SynPower XL-IV C5 0W-20. This is the same specification as the 2024 Tiguan and represents the new VW standard for EA211 EVO and EA888 Gen4 engines. The 0W-20 viscosity ensures immediate cold lubrication and reduces internal friction. Those coming from a Golf 7 and still using 5W-30 are applying the wrong specification.

🟠 4. SYNPOWER XL-III C3 0W-30: GTI CLUBSPORT, GOLF R AND GTD
High-performance versions — GTI Clubsport (300 hp), Golf R (320 and 333 hp), and Golf GTD (200 hp) — require the Valvoline SynPower XL-III C3 0W-30 specification. The same applies to the 2.0 TDI 143 hp with CRVC code. Using 0W-20 on a Golf R or a GTI Clubsport is incorrect.
