BMW N47: TIMING CHAIN – WHY IT BREAKS, SYMPTOMS AND REAL COSTS

Updated April 2026 – Technical analysis based on real workshop cases.

The timing chain of the BMW N47 engine is one of the most discussed – and most expensive – failures in the world of used diesel BMWs. Not because it is inevitable, but because when it strikes unexpectedly, the damage is almost always catastrophic: bent valves, compromised pistons, an engine that needs to be rebuilt.

The underlying problem is well-known: the chain is positioned on the flywheel side, not on the front side as in most engines. This makes it expensive to replace even when it's still intact – and much more expensive when it breaks. Those who know about the problem in advance have all the tools to avoid it.

🚗 1. WHICH N47 VERSIONS ARE MOST AT RISK

The chain problem potentially affects all N47 versions, but not uniformly. The first-generation versions (N47D20A, produced between 2007 and 2010) are those with the highest incidence – the original guide rails and tensioner proved to be borderline on many units.

The N47TUD20 versions (second generation, from 2010 onwards) received updates to the timing components that significantly reduced the frequency of the problem. They didn't eliminate it – but the statistical difference is real.

Version Production years Chain risk Main models
N47D20A / C / D 2007–2010 High 316d, 318d, 320d, 116d, 118d, 120d, X1 E84
N47TUD20 2010–2014 Medium 320d E90/F30, 120d E87/F20, xDrive20d X1/X3
N47D20 TOP (biturbo) 2008–2014 Medium 123d, 125d, 330d some markets
⚠️ The rule of thumb: any N47 with more than 120,000 km and an uncertain service history should be treated as a chain-at-risk car, regardless of the year of manufacture. The oil history matters more than the engine version.

⛓️ 2. WHY THE CHAIN FAILS: THE TECHNICAL CAUSE EXPLAINED

Flywheel-side positioning

On almost all engines, the timing system is located on the front side of the engine – accessible by opening the hood, visible and reachable without disassembling half the engine. BMW made a different choice for the N47: the chain is located on the rear side, towards the gearbox.

The technical advantage of this choice is real – it reduces vibrations transmitted to the front of the engine and improves overall balance. The practical cost is just as real: accessing the chain often requires removing the engine or at least disassembling the gearbox. What would be a 4–5 hour job on other engines becomes an 8–12 hour job. And this is directly reflected in the bill.

Guide rails and tensioner: the components that fail first

The chain itself is not the main problem – it is designed to last. The components that fail first are the guide rails (the plastic guides on which the chain slides) and the hydraulic tensioner (the device that maintains correct tension through oil pressure).

When the guide rails wear out or crack, the chain starts to rattle irregularly. When the tensioner can no longer compensate for the play due to chain elongation, the risk of timing misalignment arises. The tensioner operates on oil pressure – if the oil is degraded or too low, the tensioner responds slowly or not at all, especially in the seconds immediately after a cold start.

The link to DPF-degraded oil

There is a little-known aggravating factor: every time the DPF regenerates, a small amount of diesel fuel ends up in the engine oil. In a car used in the city with service intervals extended to the limit of the Longlife Service, the oil can be significantly diluted by diesel fuel – with a real viscosity much lower than the nominal one. A tensioner fed by diluted oil does not maintain the correct pressure. The result is exactly the cold start rattle that many N47 owners have heard at least once.

🚨 3. SYMPTOMS: HOW TO RECOGNIZE IT BEFORE IT BREAKS

The problem with the N47 is that the chain often gives no major preliminary warning signs. But there are some signs – and recognizing them in time can make the difference between a €1,300 intervention and a €4,500 one.

The test every N47 owner should do

After an overnight stop – engine completely cold – open the hood and start the car. Listen for the first 5–10 seconds without looking at your phone. If you hear a metallic noise similar to a "rattle" or "tinkling" that then disappears as the engine warms up, you have found the most important signal the N47 can give you. Do not ignore it.

Symptom When it appears What it means Urgency
Brief metallic noise on cold start First 5–10 seconds, then disappears Tensioner pressure build-up delay — chain already elongated Diagnosis within 2–3 weeks
Continuous metallic noise at operating temperature At idle and under acceleration even when warm Tensioner at its limit — advanced elongation Urgent diagnosis — stop driving
Engine light — codes P0016 / P0017 / P0018 / P0019 Intermittent or continuous Camshaft misalignment detected by ECU Immediate OBD diagnosis
Progressive loss of power, irregular idle While driving, at various RPMs Misalignment in progress — engine no longer operating with correct timing Urgent diagnosis
Slow or difficult cold start Especially in winter or after a long stop May indicate advanced elongation — or other causes, to be verified Diagnosis within 1 week
🚨 Beware of normalization: many N47 owners hear the cold start rattle for weeks or months, get used to it, and stop worrying about it. This is one of the most expensive mistakes you can make on this engine. The noise signals a real problem that progressively worsens – it is not normal engine behavior.

🛢️ 4. THE ROLE OF OIL: THE SPECIFICATION THAT MAKES THE DIFFERENCE

The hydraulic chain tensioner operates with engine oil pressure. If the oil does not have the correct viscosity – or if it is degraded – the tensioner cannot maintain correct tension during the critical cold start phase, when the temperature is low and the oil is still thick and slow to circulate.

Mandatory specification: BMW Longlife-04 (LL-04)

BMW prescribes oils with BMW Longlife-04 approval, 5W-30 viscosity, for the N47. This approval is not interchangeable with a generic 5W-30 – the LL-04 formulation has specific low ash characteristics (Low SAPS) that are fundamental both for DPF compatibility and for the correct response of the tensioner in cold start conditions.

An oil without LL-04 approval – even if it is a premium brand and the same viscosity – does not offer the same guarantees of behavior for the N47 tensioner. In workshops, we almost systematically see the wrong oil in BMWs with existing chain issues.

Real interval: 10,000 km, not 30,000

BMW's Longlife Service system can calculate intervals up to 30,000 km. On an N47 with any mileage, this is not a safe choice. The consolidated practical recommendation is a maximum of 10,000–12,000 km. For cars used predominantly in the city, where DPF regenerations dilute the oil with diesel, this can be reduced to 7,000–8,000 km.

🛡️ 5. PREVENTIVE INTERVENTION: WHEN AND WHY IT'S WORTHWHILE

The question every N47 owner eventually asks is: does it make sense to replace the chain preventively, without obvious symptoms?

The answer depends on three variables: mileage, oil history, and year of manufacture. As a general guideline used in workshops:

  • Under 120,000 km with documented service history and LL-04 oil — semi-annual monitoring is sufficient, no preventive intervention is necessary
  • Between 120,000 and 180,000 km with uncertain history — assessment with phase adaptive diagnostics. If the mechanic detects misalignment in reading, preventive intervention is recommended
  • Over 180,000 km without documented intervention — regardless of symptoms, a preventive chain kit is almost always the most economical choice in the medium term
  • Any N47 with a cold start metallic noise — diagnosis and intervention without waiting for other signals

What a proper intervention includes

A properly executed N47 chain intervention is not just about the chain. A reputable mechanic always replaces the complete kit: chain + guide rails + hydraulic tensioner + gaskets. Replacing only the chain while leaving worn guide rails means having to reopen the engine within a few years – with double labor costs compared to a complete kit done once.

💡 The math of the estimate: complete chain kit in a specialized independent BMW workshop = €900–€1,400. Engine repair after chain breakage = €3,000–€5,000 or more. For a car worth €7,000, the choice is obvious.

💰 6. REAL COSTS: ESTIMATE, EMERGENCY AND WHAT THE KIT INCLUDES

Scenario What it includes Independent workshop Official BMW network
Phase adaptive diagnostics Specialized OBD reading, cold test €80–€130 €130–€200
Preventive chain kit (complete) Chain + guide rails + tensioner + gaskets + labor €900–€1,400 €1,400–€1,800
Chain breakage — limited damage Kit + partial cylinder head overhaul €1,800–€2,800 €2,500–€3,800
Chain breakage — severe damage Engine removal, valves, pistons, cylinder head €3,200–€4,800 €4,500–€6,500+

Original or aftermarket parts?

For the N47 chain kit, the quality of the spare parts is not a minor detail. OE (Original BMW Parts) or equivalent OEM components from primary suppliers like Iwis, Morse, or INA are the correct choice. Lower quality parts may have guide rails with less resistant plastics or tensioners with different tolerances – on an engine that has already shown sensitivity to this component, saving €80 on the kit is an imprudent choice.

🔧 7. OFFICIAL OR INDEPENDENT WORKSHOP: WHAT TO CHOOSE

It's one of the most frequent questions about this repair, and the answer is not straightforward.

Official BMW Workshop

The main advantage is the certainty of original parts and the BMW warranty on the repair. Some dealerships also apply a warranty of up to 7 years or 200,000 km on parts replaced as part of official interventions — it's worth checking when getting a quote. The disadvantage is the cost: labor is on average 30–50% more expensive than at a specialized independent workshop.

Independent Specialized BMW Workshop

A specialized BMW mechanic with documented experience on the N47 can do an identical or superior job at significantly lower costs. The selection criterion is not "official vs. independent" but specific experience with the N47: this is a complex repair that requires dedicated BMW tools for camshaft positioning during replacement. A generic mechanic without specific experience can make costly assembly errors.

Questions to ask before confirming the quote

  • Does the quote include the chain, guides, AND tensioner, or just the chain?
  • What brand of kit are you using? (Iwis, Morse, INA are positive references)
  • Do you have specific tools for N47 camshaft positioning?
  • How many similar repairs have you performed in the last 12 months?

A reputable workshop will answer these questions without hesitation. One that answers vaguely or proposes replacing only the chain while saving on guides should be avoided for this specific repair.

❓ FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

The cold start noise only lasts 3 seconds: should I worry?

Yes. Even a very brief noise that disappears immediately indicates that in the first few seconds of starting, the tensioner cannot compensate for the chain's slack. It is the most reliable early warning sign available for this engine. It's not yet an emergency, but it requires specialist diagnosis within 2–3 weeks – not months.

I just changed the oil with the wrong specification: what risk do I have?

A single oil change with a sub-optimal specification does not cause immediate damage. Accelerated chain wear is a process that accumulates over time with repeated use of the wrong oil. The correct action is to perform the next oil change with the correct LL-04 product and, if the car already has significant mileage, to perform a phase adaptive diagnostic to check the current status.

Can the N47 chain break without any warning?

Unfortunately, yes, in some cases. It is one of the reasons why preventive intervention is so important for this engine. Some breakages are preceded by weeks of ignored cold start noise; others occur with very few preliminary signs, especially in cars where the tensioner suddenly fails. For N47s with significant mileage and an uncertain oil history, do not wait for symptoms.

How long does the chain last after replacement?

A complete OE quality chain kit installed correctly, with LL-04 oil changed every 10,000 km, is designed to last at least 150,000 km. Cases of breakage of correctly maintained new chains are rare. The repair should be considered permanent if done well.

Can I buy the chain kit and bring it to the mechanic?

In principle, yes, but check with the workshop first. Some workshops prefer to purchase parts directly to guarantee quality and cover the work with their own warranty. If you bring the kit yourself, make sure it is complete (chain + guides + tensioner, not just the chain) and of OE or OEM quality from primary suppliers.

📌 CONCLUSION

The timing chain of the BMW N47 is a real, documented, and costly problem — but it is also one of the few serious failures that can be almost completely prevented with the right actions. LL-04 oil changed every 10,000 km, attention to cold start noise, phase adaptive diagnostics starting from 120,000 km.

Those who know the problem in advance and act preventively save an average of €2,000–€3,000 compared to those who wait for the breakage. For a BMW worth €6,000–€9,000 on the market, the difference between maintaining and losing the investment often comes down to this.

Vorrei comprare una BMW 118d anno 2023. Mi sapete dire se monta il motore N47? Grazie
