Fiamm, a leading company in the production of automotive and industrial batteries, celebrates its 80th anniversary this year. In over eight decades of activity, the company has been able to combine innovation and tradition, becoming an international point of reference.
Fiamm boasts one of the highest production capacities in Europe, with 70 thousand tons of batteries per year and a daily transformation of 242 thousand kg of raw material. Furthermore, the company is able to create 2 million plates every day, demonstrating a great production capacity and high efficiency.
Attention to quality is a priority for Fiamm, which has obtained ISO 9001:2015, IATF 16949:2016, ISO 14001:2015, ISO 50001:2018 and ISO 45001:2018 certification. Furthermore, the company is present in 60 countries worldwide and produces and distributes batteries for automotive and industrial use in an ethical and sustainable way.
An example of how Fiamm has been able to combine innovation and sustainability is the "Start & Stop" system, introduced in 2010. Thanks to this technology, the company has contributed to saving 4.3 million tons of CO2, demonstrating that it is attentive not only to the quality of its products, but also to the impact they have on the environment.
The Fiamm brand has historically been owned by the Dolcetta family, but in 2017 it was acquired by Hitachi Chemical, a company listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange and part of the Hitachi Group. Subsequently, Showa Denko Group, another Japanese multinational group listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange and specialized in the production of chemical and industrial materials, acquired the entire Hitachi Chemical, thus also becoming the owner of Fiamm. Despite these changes in ownership, Fiamm has maintained its name and its presence on the Italian and global market, thanks to which it is widely recognized and recognizable. The company, under the leadership of the Japanese multinational, is also expanding its presence in new markets. Fujio Owa, CEO of Fiamm, says he is proud to work for the company and its strategic sector, which provides important products for both automotive and industrial use. During the Covid-19 pandemic, Fiamm has continued to work in its factories, considered part of the essential services for the functioning of the country.
Fiamm has continued to grow even during these difficult years, supporting the national and international energy system in key sectors such as hospitals, railways and data centers during the pandemic. In 2022, Fiamm expects to generate revenues of over 380 million euros, of which approximately 240 million euros in the automotive sector and 140 million euros in the industrial battery sector, with a growth of 3% compared to 2021. The Showa Denko group's strategy is to introduce new processes and working methods, leveraging the Italian company's enormous knowledge and problem-solving ability.
Fiamm has always invested in Research and Development, which has allowed it to maintain a presence on the market in the lead-acid battery sector, which has a very high recyclability percentage. The company has increased investments in this sector by 66% compared to the pre-pandemic period, in order to expand a product line that is now strategic for its growth. Furthermore, in 2023, Fiamm will increase investments in digitalization and Information Technology by 45% compared to the pre-pandemic period. Piergiorgio Balbo, Head of Reserve Power Solutions, stated that Fiamm produces most of its batteries in Italy with recycled and recyclable materials, providing the best solutions for the development of storage systems designed for technologies that produce energy from renewable sources such as solar and wind. Balbo also stated that the company is going through a phase of digital transformation that involves both offices and production, located in Italy in the Veronella (VR) and Avezzano (AQ) plants. The company has placed emphasis on the environment and safety, managing to identify and significantly reduce risk factors at work.
FIAMM aims to provide increasingly high-performance batteries for the automotive sector, especially in view of the transition from internal combustion engines to electric ones. The company sees this opportunity as a way to offer innovative lead-acid battery solutions that will still be important in new electric vehicles and auxiliary electronics, such as safety and interior lighting. The sense of belonging to the FIAMM group has always been a core value for the company and with over 1,200 employees, they have worked to implement a new organization that enhances the implementation of the strategic plan, introducing flexibility and structured smart working, and working on specialized training, soft skills and digitalization. In recent years, they have worked on creating a new corporate culture, combining high quality with international procedures and processes with Italian ingenuity and passion.
