ALFA ROMEO STELVIO (FROM 2017): ADAS UNAVAILABLE – RADAR AND CAMERA ERRORS

Technical guide for specialized workshops and mechatronic trainers.

On the Alfa Romeo Stelvio (2017–present), one of the most frequent messages in client diagnostics is: “ADAS system unavailable”, with deactivation of ACC (Adaptive Cruise Control), AEB, and Lane Assist.

In most cases, it is not a hardware failure of the radar or camera, but rather:

  • unsuitable environmental or optical conditions,
  • 12V network instability,
  • lack of calibration after bodywork interventions,
  • CAN inconsistencies between radar module, camera, and ABS/ESC.

This article analyzes the problem with an advanced workshop approach: system logic, real DTCs, diagnostic flows, and calibration procedures.

1️⃣ ADAS ARCHITECTURE ON STELVIO

On the Stelvio, ADAS management is distributed across multiple modules:

Component Function Communication
Front Radar (ACC) Distance and relative speed detection High-speed CAN-C
Front Camera (FCA) Lane Assist, sign recognition, AEB CAN + LIN
ABS/ESC Dynamic validation and automatic braking CAN-C
BCM Power management and network wake-up Body CAN

The logic is fail-safe: if one of the modules communicates inconsistent or out-of-range data, the system deactivates ACC and generates the message "ADAS unavailable."

2️⃣ RECURRING DTCS AND PROTECTION LOGIC

Codes frequently detected in workshops:

  • C1A67 / C1A6F – Radar alignment out of range
  • C1A43 – Radar obscured
  • U0422 – Invalid data from ABS
  • U0415 – Implausible data from ESC
  • B1Axx – Camera configuration error

⚠️ Attention: many of these DTCs are conditional and not permanent. The ADAS control unit stores the event even for temporary environmental conditions.

In over 60% of cases analyzed in workshops, the radar was perfectly functional but disabled due to alignment inconsistency or voltage issues.

3️⃣ FRONT RADAR: REAL ERRORS AND FALSE POSITIVES

The radar is mounted behind the front bumper. Typical causes of error are:

  • Bumper removed and reinstalled without calibration
  • Bracket slightly deformed after a minor impact
  • Accumulation of dirt or ice
  • Excessive paint thickness after repainting

An angular deviation of 0.6–1.0° is sufficient to generate alignment DTCs.

After any bodywork intervention, it is mandatory to:

  • Static calibration with certified target panel
  • Verify vehicle height and toe-in
  • Clear DTCs and dynamic road test

4️⃣ FRONT CAMERA AND WINDSHIELD REPLACEMENT

The camera is integrated into the rearview mirror assembly. After windshield replacement:

  • Recalibration is mandatory
  • The glass must be OEM or ADAS-compatible
  • The surface must be free of optical distortions

Frequent errors:

  • Installation of non-certified ADAS aftermarket glass
  • Incorrect positioning of camera support
  • Bonding with non-compliant thicknesses

In these cases, the control unit generates an error even without permanent DTCs.

5️⃣ INFLUENCE OF 12V VOLTAGE

The Stelvio is extremely sensitive to 12V network stability. During startup, if the voltage drops below 9.6 V for more than 200 ms:

  • The radar may not initialize correctly
  • The camera may generate a communication error
  • ACC is deactivated for the key cycle

Before replacing sensors, check:

  • Resting voltage (≥12.4V)
  • Voltage drop during startup
  • IBS status and intelligent charging management

6️⃣ STATIC AND DYNAMIC CALIBRATION

Static calibration:

  • Vehicle on a level surface
  • Correct tire pressure
  • Standardized load
  • Target positioned with millimeter tolerance

Dynamic calibration:

  • Constant speed 60–90 km/h
  • Road with clear markings
  • Absence of close traffic

Incorrect toe-in can compromise calibration even if the radar and camera are intact.

7️⃣ RECOMMENDED DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE (WORKSHOP)

  1. Full DTC scan on all control units
  2. 12V voltage and IBS history check
  3. Alignment and toe-in inspection
  4. Radar bracket inspection
  5. Windshield and camera support verification
  6. Static calibration + dynamic test

Only after these steps does it make sense to consider replacing the radar or camera module.

❓ TECHNICAL FAQS

Does the radar almost always need to be replaced?

No. In most cases, the problem is alignment or voltage.

Is calibration always needed after bumper removal?

Yes. Even without impact, removal alters the geometric reference.

Can the battery really deactivate ACC?

Yes. If the 12V network is unstable, the ADAS system enters protection mode.

📌 TECHNICAL CONCLUSION

On the Alfa Romeo Stelvio from 2017, "ADAS unavailable" errors are often the result of:

  • Inconsistent radar geometry
  • Camera optical problems
  • 12V power supply instability
  • Lack of post-intervention calibration

Radar replacement is the last option, not the first.
