Discs wear along with the pads and can warp due to overheating (long downhill braking, improper use). Warping manifests as characteristic vibrations in the pedal during braking — the disc "beats" against the pad with each revolution. It is not immediately dangerous but worsens rapidly if not addressed. Discs should be replaced along with the pads if the thickness is below limits or if they have deep grooves.
Degraded brake fluid
Brake fluid is hygroscopic: it absorbs moisture from the environment over time. As the water content increases, the boiling point of the fluid decreases — during prolonged braking (long descents, heavy traffic), the fluid can partially vaporize, causing a spongy pedal.
